Hamas confirmed on May 16 that senior commander Izz al-Din al-Haddad was killed in an Israeli attack in the Gaza Strip, according to statements released by the Palestinian group amid continuing fighting in the territory. Hamas said al-Haddad was killed during an Israeli operation targeting areas in southern Gaza.

The group described al-Haddad as one of its prominent military figures but did not immediately provide additional details about the circumstances of the strike. Israeli authorities had not officially commented on the specific announcement at the time of reporting, though Israel has continued targeting Hamas commanders and infrastructure throughout its military campaign in Gaza.

The announcement comes as fighting between Israel and Hamas continues across Gaza following months of conflict that have caused widespread destruction and displacement. International mediators, including Egypt and Qatar, have continued ceasefire efforts, while humanitarian agencies warn of worsening conditions for civilians inside the enclave.
