Haaretz Investigation: Israel Arms Palestinian Militias in Gaza Amid Allegations of Expulsions, Looting and Killings
An investigation by Israeli newspaper Haaretz has raised concerns over Israel’s alleged use of armed Palestinian militias and criminal gangs to carry out operations in Gaza.
The investigation, based on testimony from Israeli soldiers, UN reports and satellite imagery, found that at least five militia groups—and possibly a sixth—operate from fortified bases in areas controlled by Israeli forces.
According to the report, Israel’s military and Shin Bet provide some of the groups with weapons, training, protection and operational support. Israeli soldiers reportedly described the militias as increasingly integrated with Israeli military operations.
The groups are accused of forcing Palestinians from their homes, looting property and burning buildings. One Israeli soldier cited by Haaretz alleged that fighters entered homes, took belongings and later set the buildings on fire.
The investigation also reported that Israel has provided infrastructure for militia activities, including a training facility near Shuja’iyya. Fighters have reportedly moved around Israeli military positions and used social media footage for recruitment and propaganda.
One militia reportedly had links to Islamic State, while another leader has publicly acknowledged cooperating with Israel.
The arrangement has raised concerns among Israeli personnel and Palestinian sources over potential abuses against civilians. Hamas has also said it will not surrender its weapons while these militias remain armed and supported by Israel.
The report has renewed fears that armed local groups could become a long-term instrument of control in Gaza, particularly as Israel continues to oppose an independent Palestinian security force.
