Syrian activist Hassan Akkad detained in Damascus
British-Syrian activist Hassan Akkad has been detained by security forces in Damascus following a complaint linked to his online criticism of a journalist, according to campaign sources.
Akkad, founder of the “Give Us the Money That You Owe!” campaign focused on Syria’s reconstruction funding, was arrested on Wednesday night in the al-Malki area while sitting in a café. Reports say the detention followed a legal complaint filed by Syrian journalist Mousa al-Omar over Akkad’s social media posts and public remarks.
The activist had previously been summoned by a cybersecurity unit, and his case reportedly involved multiple complaints. Authorities confirmed he was detained under a search warrant, although it was later said that the case had been dropped. However, confusion remains over the legal basis for his arrest.
Akkad’s supporters argue that the detention raises concerns about freedom of expression and the use of cybercrime laws against online speech. His lawyers also say proper legal procedures may not have been followed.
A refugee and award-winning filmmaker known for documenting his journey from Syria to Europe, Akkad returned to Syria after years in exile. The incident has sparked renewed debate over political expression and legal protections in the country.
