UN Warns of Worsening Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza Amid Restricted Aid Access
The United Nations has warned of worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza as Israel continues to restrict access, allowing only one approved cargo crossing into the enclave. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the Kerem Shalom crossing has been reopened, but it remains the sole entry point for authorized aid shipments.
UN spokesperson Farhan Haq said humanitarian partners are still working to deliver aid despite major bureaucratic obstacles and funding shortages. He stressed that “needs remain immense,” with tens of thousands of families living in overcrowded shelters, while many others are forced to sleep in damaged buildings or outdoors.
As temperatures rise, makeshift tents are becoming increasingly unlivable during the day. Aid agencies are urging the entry of essential materials such as timber, plywood, sandbags, and cement to improve shelter conditions.
Food insecurity is also worsening. The number of community kitchens has dropped sharply, with daily meal distribution falling from around 1.5 million meals in mid-March to about 678,000 meals by the end of May.
Gaza has faced a long-standing blockade since 2007, and the ongoing war since October 2023 has left large parts of the population displaced, with widespread destruction and severe shortages of basic necessities.
