Central Europe Faces Record Heat as Heatwave Intensifies
A severe heatwave is sweeping across Central Europe, bringing record temperatures and putting pressure on energy and transport systems.
Slovakia recorded 42.2°C in the southern village of Dolne Plachtince, according to the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute. The extreme heat has also contributed to unusually low water levels in the Danube River.
The falling river levels are creating challenges for Slovakia’s energy sector. The country’s only nuclear power plant is currently operating at around 80 percent of its capacity as water availability becomes increasingly limited.
Austria has also experienced record-breaking temperatures as the heatwave continues across the region.
Meanwhile, Italy has placed all 27 of its major cities under the highest heat alert, reflecting concerns about the health risks associated with prolonged extreme temperatures.
The heatwave is also affecting transportation and other infrastructure across Europe, highlighting the growing pressure that extreme weather can place on essential services.
With temperatures remaining unusually high, authorities are urging people to take precautions as the dangerous heat continues.
