The killing of veteran Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh continues to draw international attention four years after she was shot while covering an Israeli military raid in Jenin, occupied West Bank, on May 11, 2022. Media organisations and rights groups say the lack of accountability in her case has contributed to growing dangers faced by journalists reporting from Palestinian territories.
According to press freedom organisations, more than 250 journalists and media workers have been killed since the start of the Genocide in Gaza in October 2023, making it one of the deadliest conflicts for journalists in modern history. Israel has denied intentionally targeting journalists and says some incidents occurred during active combat operations.
Investigations by several international media outlets and human rights organisations previously concluded that Abu Akleh was likely killed by Israeli fire despite wearing clearly marked press gear. The United States and other international actors have repeatedly called for accountability, though no criminal charges have been announced.
