Armenia Sees Near-Future Breakthrough in Türkiye Normalisation Talks
Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said on Monday that he expects full normalisation with Türkiye in the “near future”, citing ongoing diplomatic dialogue and continued meetings between the two sides.
Speaking to lawmakers during a parliamentary committee session, Mirzoyan said bilateral engagement has remained active, including working-group discussions focused on reopening transport links such as the Kars–Gyumri railway.
He expressed confidence that “tangible progress” could soon be achieved, adding that full normalisation is becoming increasingly realistic as talks continue.
Mirzoyan also noted that informal trade between the two countries already exists through third-party routes, even though there is no direct geographical trade link.
Relations between Ankara and Yerevan have remained strained since Türkiye closed its border and cut diplomatic ties in 1993 following the conflict over Azerbaijan’s Karabakh region. However, efforts to restore ties have accelerated since 2020, with both countries appointing special envoys and holding multiple rounds of negotiations.
