A mud volcano unexpectedly erupted on February 25, 2026, in the San Juan de Urabá area of Colombia’s Antioquia department, spewing mud, gases and flames near a municipal water treatment plant and prompting precautionary evacuations.
Officials from the Antioquia Administrative Department of Risk Management (DAGRAN) said the eruption occurred close to homes and infrastructure, but no human injuries or fatalities have been reported. Nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution while emergency teams assess the stability of the ground and monitor for further activity.
Videos shared on social media and confirmed by local authorities show towering columns of mud and smoke rising into the sky, with methane gas igniting into flames — a characteristic feature of mud volcano eruptions when trapped underground gases are released.
Although these events do not involve molten lava like traditional volcanoes, they can still pose dangers such as ground fissures, vegetation fires and damage to roads. Local authorities have closed affected roadways and continue to urge caution as technical teams evaluate the site.
