Europe hit by record-breaking heatwave as temperatures surge across continent

Europe is facing another day of extreme heat, with widespread temperature records and ongoing heatwave conditions affecting much of the continent.

According to weather analyses and forecasts, more than 100 million people are expected to experience temperatures above 35°C (95°F), while over 380 million may see temperatures exceeding 30°C (86°F). The heatwave is impacting countries across Western and Central Europe, including France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, and others.

France is among the hardest hit, with around 63 million people under extreme heat alerts and much of the country placed under high-level warnings. In some regions, power outages have occurred due to heat-related infrastructure strain. Authorities also reported multiple heat-related incidents, including child deaths linked to overheating in vehicles.

Several countries have broken June temperature records. The United Kingdom recorded its hottest June temperature ever at 36.4°C, while Switzerland reached 38°C, also a June record.

In Spain, health monitoring systems estimated hundreds of excess deaths linked to extreme heat, with temperatures in some areas exceeding 40°C. Experts warn that “tropical nights” and prolonged heat are increasing health risks, especially for vulnerable populations.

Officials across Europe continue issuing warnings as the heatwave persists, with no immediate relief expected.
