US Restores Iran Oil Sanctions Following Strait of Hormuz Attacks
The United States has revoked a temporary sanctions waiver that had allowed limited sales of Iranian oil, citing recent attacks on commercial vessels near the Strait of Hormuz.
A US official said the decision followed what Washington described as “unacceptable” attacks on commercial shipping, adding that the earlier agreement with Iran was based on Tehran meeting its commitments.
The waiver, introduced in June, had temporarily permitted the production and sale of Iranian crude oil and petroleum products while indirect negotiations continued. Under the preliminary agreement, Iran was expected to keep the Strait of Hormuz open and continue talks over its nuclear programme.
Iran has not claimed responsibility for the maritime attacks. The latest move restores oil sanctions as negotiations continue over Tehran’s nuclear programme, frozen assets and regional security.
