At least 23 Chadian soldiers were killed in a Boko Haram attack on a military position in the Lake Chad region near the Nigerian border, the Chadian army said on May 5.

The assault targeted a military base on Koulfoua Island in western Chad, an area that has long faced violence from armed groups operating around Lake Chad. Military officials said 17 attackers were also killed during the fighting, while several others were wounded.

Chad’s army said reinforcements were deployed following the attack as security forces continued operations to track down fighters involved in the assault. The Lake Chad basin remains one of the most active insurgency zones in West Africa, with Boko Haram and rival armed factions frequently launching raids on military posts and civilian communities.

The attack comes amid ongoing regional military efforts involving Chad, Nigeria, Niger and Cameroon to contain armed groups operating across porous border areas around the lake.

Boko Haram began its insurgency in northeastern Nigeria in 2009 before spreading attacks into neighboring countries, contributing to one of Africa’s longest-running security crises.
