Former Syrian General Arrested Over Civil War Operations
Syrian security forces have arrested former Major General Ahmed Mohammad Ismail, a senior commander who served in the Republican Guard under the former government of Bashar al-Assad.
Ismail held several senior military positions and was involved in operations in Aleppo, Daraa and Eastern Ghouta during Syria’s 13-year civil war. Military records also show that he later served as chief of staff of the Republican Guard before commanding the 14th Division.
The arrest is part of a wider campaign by Syria’s post-Assad authorities targeting former military and security officials over their roles during the conflict. Several former pilots and senior officers have also been detained in recent weeks.
An investigation into Ismail’s wartime activities is continuing, with further legal and judicial procedures expected.
