Rifaat al-Assad, the younger brother of former Syrian President Hafez al-Assad and uncle of ousted President Bashar al-Assad, died on January 20, 2026, at age 88 in the United Arab Emirates from complications of influenza.

Background

A key figure in Syria's Ba'athist regime, Rifaat commanded elite Defense Companies and earned the nickname "Butcher of Hama" for leading the brutal 1982 suppression of a Muslim Brotherhood uprising, resulting in 10,000-40,000 deaths.

Family Ties

Rifaat was the brother of Hafez al-Assad (1971-2000 president) and thus uncle to Bashar, who succeeded him but later distanced himself from Rifaat after a failed 1984 coup attempt. Married four times, Rifaat had 16 children; notable offspring include businessman Ribal al-Assad and son Mudar, linking the family to prominent Alawite clans.

Later Years

Exiled after 1984, Rifaat faced money-laundering convictions in France and war crimes probes in Europe, briefly returned to Syria in 2021, and fled again after Bashar's December 2024 ouster.
