At least 30 people were killed and dozens injured in a stampede at Haiti’s historic Citadelle Laferrière on April 12, authorities said, as large crowds gathered at the UNESCO-listed site.
The incident occurred when visitors reportedly rushed through a narrow access point, triggering panic and a deadly crush. Emergency services struggled to respond quickly due to the remote, mountainous location of the fortress, which sits about 900 meters above sea level near the town of Milot.
Local officials confirmed that at least 30 people died, with many others sustaining injuries ranging from fractures to severe trauma. Hospitals in nearby areas were overwhelmed as victims were transported for treatment.
The Citadelle Laferrière, a symbol of Haiti’s independence, attracts large crowds during holidays and cultural events. Authorities have launched an investigation into crowd control measures and safety protocols at the site.
