Trump Defends Peace Deal With Iran to Avoid Economic Catastrophe

US President Donald Trump has defended his decision to pursue a peace agreement with Iran, saying he wanted to prevent an economic crisis that could have resulted from a prolonged conflict.

Speaking to reporters, Trump referenced former US President Herbert Hoover, who was in office during the 1929 stock market crash and the Great Depression. Trump said Hoover was “always the one I didn’t want to be,” adding that he wanted to avoid an “economic catastrophe.”

The comments come after criticism over remarks Trump made last month, when he said that his primary focus regarding the conflict with Iran was preventing Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, rather than considering the financial impact on Americans.

Trump has repeatedly argued that diplomacy and a negotiated settlement are necessary to avoid broader economic and geopolitical instability.
