Amazon has agreed to acquire satellite communications company Globalstar in a deal worth about $11.57 billion, as the tech giant moves to expand its space-based network and compete with Elon Musk’s Starlink.
The agreement, announced on April 14, 2026, will give Amazon access to Globalstar’s existing satellite infrastructure, spectrum licences, and operations, helping accelerate development of its Amazon Leo low-Earth orbit satellite network.
Globalstar currently provides satellite services used in features such as emergency connectivity on smartphones, while Amazon is aiming to expand into direct-to-device communication services, including voice, text, and data in areas without traditional mobile coverage.
The deal highlights growing competition in the satellite internet sector, where Amazon is seeking to catch up with SpaceX’s Starlink, which already dominates the market with a far larger network of satellites. Analysts say the acquisition could significantly reshape the industry, as major technology firms invest heavily in global connectivity from space.
