Al Jazeera Film Alleges Widespread Sexual Violence in Israeli Detention Facilities

A new Al Jazeera documentary has presented testimonies from former Palestinian detainees alleging systematic torture and sexual violence, including rape, while in Israeli custody.

The investigation, titled Bodies of Evidence: Israel’s Darkest Weapon, features accounts from former prisoners who describe severe abuse during detention following arrests by Israeli forces. One former detainee, Muhammad al-Bakri, said he was held, beaten, and later subjected to sexual violence alongside other prisoners while soldiers allegedly used dogs during the abuse.

He claimed detainees were stripped, blindfolded, and assaulted while soldiers laughed and recorded the incident. Other testimonies featured in the film describe similar patterns of humiliation, torture, and sexual violence in detention facilities.

The documentary cites findings and concerns raised by UN officials, the International Criminal Court, and human rights organisations, which have previously documented allegations of widespread abuse and sexual violence against Palestinian detainees.

Al Jazeera reports that such allegations are not new but have increased in the context of the ongoing war in Gaza since October 2023, according to rights groups and investigators.

Israeli authorities have previously rejected similar allegations.
