Abdul El-Sayed Wins Michigan Senate Primary After Defeating Heavy Pro-Israel Spending

Progressive public health advocate Abdul El-Sayed has won the Democratic primary for the US Senate in Michigan, defeating Congresswoman Haley Stevens in a closely contested race.

El-Sayed overcame more than $60 million in campaign spending, much of it from pro-Israel groups supporting Stevens. The result was seen as a major setback for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), which invested heavily in the race.

If elected in November, El-Sayed, who is of Egyptian descent, would become the first Muslim senator in US history.

During his campaign, El-Sayed criticised US support for Israel’s actions in Gaza and argued that government resources should focus more on healthcare, housing and infrastructure inside the United States.

He will now face Republican former Congressman Mike Rogers in the general election, a race that could influence control of the Senate.
