Hungary Expels 10 Russian Diplomats as Tensions With Moscow Rise

Hungary has expelled 10 Russian diplomats, accusing them of carrying out activities considered incompatible with their diplomatic status under the Vienna Convention.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orban said the decision was taken to protect the country’s security and sovereignty. However, Budapest stressed that the move does not amount to a break in diplomatic relations with Moscow and that dialogue will continue.

Russia Threatens Retaliation

Moscow strongly condemned the expulsions. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned of a “harsh and painful” response, while Russia’s ambassador in Budapest described the decision as an unjustified escalation.

Hungary’s move is significant because Budapest had maintained unusually close relations with Moscow under former Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who remained in power for 16 years and opposed several EU measures targeting Russia.

A Shift in Hungary’s Foreign Policy

The expulsions come after Peter Magyar’s government took office following the April election, signaling a shift toward closer alignment with the EU and NATO while still seeking to maintain practical relations with Russia.

The European Union has backed Hungary’s decision, describing it as a legitimate response. Several EU countries have previously expelled Russian diplomats amid concerns over espionage and other activities linked to Moscow.

The latest move marks a significant change in Hungary’s approach to Russia and could further strain relations between Budapest and Moscow.
