A Russian missile and drone attack on a nine‑storey residential apartment building in the Darnytskyi district of Kyiv killed at least 24 people, including three children, and injured dozens, Ukrainian officials said. The strike occurred on 14 May 2026 amid what Ukraine described as Russia’s largest aerial assault since the war began more than four years ago.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the site, laid flowers and condemned the attack, saying Russia’s actions “would not go unpunished” and discussing plans for long‑range responses with military and security officials. A day of mourning was observed in Kyiv, with flags flown at half‑mast following the deadly strike.
Zelenskyy also said strikes targeting Russia’s oil industry and military production facilities were justified as part of Ukraine’s response. Ukrainian forces reportedly began targeting Russian energy and military infrastructure after the attack. The air force said the assault involved a combination of missiles and drones.
