The United States is deploying 5,000 additional troops to Poland in a move aimed at strengthening NATO’s eastern flank as tensions with Russia remain high over the war in Ukraine.
US officials said the deployment is intended to reinforce regional security and reassure allies in Eastern Europe amid concerns about potential escalation near NATO borders. The troops are expected to support air defence systems, logistics operations and military coordination efforts already underway in Poland.
President Donald Trump defended the decision by arguing that a stronger military presence is necessary to deter further instability in the region and protect NATO member states bordering Russia and Belarus.
Poland has become one of NATO’s key strategic hubs since the start of the Ukraine war, hosting thousands of allied troops, weapons transfers and training operations. The country has repeatedly called for a larger long-term US military presence, warning that the conflict poses a direct security threat to Eastern Europe.
The announcement comes as fighting in Ukraine continues with no sign of a ceasefire agreement, while NATO countries remain divided over how far military support for Kyiv should go.
