Syrian Family Returns From Canada to Damascus to Support Rebuilding Efforts
After years living in Canada, the Tasabehji family decided to return to Syria following the fall of the al-Assad government in late 2024, hoping to contribute to rebuilding the country.
Yasseen Tasabehji and his siblings had built a stable life near Toronto but felt a renewed connection to Syria after political changes opened the possibility of returning. During a visit in 2025, they saw opportunities to support communities facing economic and social challenges.
The family eventually moved back to Damascus and opened a climbing gym in the Mezzeh area. They are using the space not only for sports but also to create a safe community environment where young Syrians can develop skills, confidence and connections.
Tasabehji said many young people lack opportunities and positive spaces, and the family hopes their project can encourage others to see a future in Syria.
