Settlers, Soldiers and Impunity in the West Bank

Violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank continues to escalate as Israeli settlers expand their presence and attacks, while Palestinians accuse Israeli soldiers and authorities of failing to stop the violence.

Israeli settlements in the West Bank have grown substantially over recent decades, despite being considered illegal under international law. Settler attacks have included assaults, property destruction, arson and attacks on Palestinian homes, farms and places of worship.

Palestinian residents say perpetrators are rarely held accountable and accuse Israeli forces of either failing to intervene or, in some cases, taking part in attacks. The growing violence has intensified fears of further displacement and the expansion of settlements.

International pressure has increased, including sanctions imposed by Britain on businesses linked to Israeli settlements. However, Israeli settlers and business owners have largely dismissed such measures, while Palestinians say stronger action is needed to protect them and hold perpetrators accountable.

The continuing violence has deepened concerns over the future of the West Bank and the prospects for a Palestinian state.
