Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested that Moscow could be open to ending its war in Ukraine, raising questions about whether the Kremlin is shifting its position after more than four years of fighting. Speaking during recent public remarks, Putin said Russia was prepared for negotiations but insisted that any settlement would need to address what he described as the “root causes” of the conflict.

The comments came as Russia faces continued military pressure, economic strain and growing international scrutiny over the prolonged war. Analysts said Moscow may also be trying to improve its diplomatic standing amid changing global political dynamics and uncertainty surrounding Western support for Ukraine.

Despite Putin’s remarks, there has been no indication of a breakthrough in peace efforts. Ukrainian officials remain skeptical of Russia’s intentions, arguing that previous calls for talks were followed by continued attacks and military operations.

The war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has killed thousands of people, displaced millions and reshaped relations between Russia and Western countries.
