Far-right anti-Muslim activist Jake Lang sparked outrage in the Michigan cities of Dearborn and Hamtramck after attempting to burn copies of the Quran outside mosques and Muslim-majority neighbourhoods.
Lang travelled to the area after publicly threatening what he described as “the largest book burning in US history.” Large crowds gathered in protest, with community leaders accusing him of deliberately trying to provoke Muslims and inflame tensions.
Before one of the incidents in Dearborn, Lang was reportedly detained by police and later arrested on suspicion of possessing psychedelic mushrooms after officers stopped his vehicle. Authorities have not yet announced whether formal charges will follow.
Videos circulating online showed Lang setting fire to a copy of the Quran near the Islamic Center of America before police officers used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames. The incident triggered widespread condemnation from local residents, activists, and religious leaders, who described the actions as Islamophobic and intentionally inflammatory. Community organisations in both cities urged residents to remain calm while rejecting attempts to spread anti-Muslim hatred and division.
