A man armed with an axe was arrested after entering Manchester Central Mosque during Taraweeh prayers on 24 February 2026, according to Greater Manchester Police. Officers were called to the mosque during evening Ramadan prayers after reports that a man carrying weapons had entered the premises. Police said the suspect was also in possession of a hammer and a knife.

Worshippers inside the mosque intervened and restrained the man before officers arrived at the scene. No injuries were reported. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of possession of offensive weapons and further enquiries are ongoing. Police later confirmed that a second man had been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit assault in connection with the incident.

Authorities said patrols in the area were increased as a precaution and community leaders were informed. The incident comes amid heightened concern among Muslim communities following a number of recent anti-Islamic protests and incidents targeting mosques and Muslim individuals across parts of the UK. Police have not yet confirmed a motive in the Manchester case.
