Lebanon has begun what officials describe as “historic” exploratory talks with Israel, marking a rare diplomatic step between the two countries, which remain technically at war.

The discussions, reported on 14 April 2026, are focused on resolving long-standing disputes, including land border issues and other points of contention, though officials stressed that the talks do not include a ceasefire or formal peace negotiations.

Lebanese authorities said the dialogue aims to address practical matters and reduce tensions along the border, while maintaining the country’s longstanding position regarding relations with Israel. The talks are being facilitated through international mediation, reflecting ongoing efforts to prevent further escalation in the region.

Despite being labelled as “exploratory,” the move is seen as significant given decades of hostility between the two sides. Analysts note that while expectations remain limited, even indirect engagement could help stabilise a volatile border that has seen periodic clashes. Officials on both sides have not indicated any immediate breakthrough, but further discussions are expected.
