Italian authorities have seized assets worth approximately €200 million as part of an operation targeting the financial network connected to late mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro. Investigators said the confiscated assets included companies, real estate holdings, bank accounts and other businesses believed to have been used to hide or manage wealth linked to the Sicilian Cosa Nostra organization. The operation was carried out by anti-mafia police and financial investigators across several regions of Italy.

Messina Denaro, one of Italy’s most notorious fugitives, was arrested in 2023 after spending decades on the run. He died later that year while receiving treatment for cancer. Despite his death, authorities have continued efforts to dismantle the financial structures and support networks tied to his criminal empire.

Officials said the latest seizures targeted businessmen and associates suspected of helping protect and expand mafia-linked assets over many years. Italian prosecutors argue that weakening the economic power of organized crime groups remains one of the most effective tools in fighting the mafia. The operation marks another major step in Italy’s long-running campaign against Cosa Nostra and other organized crime networks.
