An Israeli drone strike wounded six people in Lebanon’s Hermel district near the Syrian border, according to Lebanon’s health ministry. The wounded included five Syrian nationals, among them two women, and one Lebanese person. The state news agency said the strike targeted a car.
Israel cites alleged security threat
The Israeli military said it targeted a Syrian man it described as a militant operating under Iranian direction. It alleged he had planned and advanced attacks against Israeli forces in southern Syria. Those claims were made by the military; the available information did not independently verify them.
The attack took place in an area that had largely avoided strikes since a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah was agreed in June. Israel has continued to carry out attacks in Lebanon despite the truce and says it will maintain forces in security zones along its borders.
Regional tensions continue
Israel has also carried out repeated strikes and incursions in Syria since the fall of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has called for Israeli forces to withdraw and urged the international community to uphold the 1974 separation agreement.
The Hermel strike adds to concerns that violence near the Lebanon-Syria frontier could broaden the risks facing civilians. The health ministry’s figures identify the wounded, while further details about the target and damage were not immediately available.
