Iran War After Six Months Political Fallout Economic Damage and Growing US Military Strain

Six months after the United States and Israel launched their war against Iran, the conflict has become a costly stalemate with major consequences for Iran, the US and the global economy.

1. Political pressure on Trump:
The war has become increasingly unpopular in the US. Trump’s approval rating has fallen from 40% to 33%, while only 31% of Americans approve of the conflict. Rising fuel prices could also hurt Republicans ahead of the November midterm elections.

2. Global economic impact:
Disruption around the Strait of Hormuz pushed oil prices higher and raised fears of a global recession. The IMF has lowered its 2026 global growth forecast to 3%, although the economy has proved more resilient than during the oil shocks of the 1970s.

3. Iran is damaged but still fighting:
Iran has suffered major military and economic losses, but it retains missiles and drones and has continued attacking regional targets and disrupting shipping. Food inflation reportedly reached 128% year-on-year in July.

4. Regional instability:
The conflict has increased risks for US allies across the Middle East. Iranian attacks have targeted Gulf states and military facilities, while disruptions in the Red Sea have increased shipping, insurance and supply-chain costs.

5. Iran’s nuclear program delayed, not eliminated:
US and Israeli strikes damaged key Iranian nuclear facilities and reportedly killed nuclear scientists. However, uncertainty remains over Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile because international inspectors have been unable to fully verify its location.

6. US military readiness strained:
The war has killed 18 US service members and injured more than 750. The US has also lost aircraft and used large quantities of missile-defense and precision munitions. Extended deployments have placed additional pressure on American forces and readiness in other regions.

After six months, Iran remains undefeated, the Strait of Hormuz remains severely disrupted, and there is still no clear path to ending the conflict.
