Iran Says Strait of Hormuz Will Stay Closed Until US Accepts Its Demands

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has said the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until the United States accepts Tehran’s demands, including compensation for damage caused during the war.

Iran has exercised control over passage through the strategic waterway since US and Israeli strikes on Iran began on February 28. Ships seeking to pass through the strait are currently required to coordinate with Iranian authorities and use a designated route along Iran’s coast. Tehran has also announced plans to introduce a service fee for vessels using the route.

The crisis has disrupted maritime traffic and contributed to tensions surrounding an earlier ceasefire and a subsequent memorandum outlining a framework for peace talks.

US President Donald Trump has played down Iran’s demands, saying Washington is only partially negotiating while monitoring Iran’s economic difficulties.

The dispute over the Strait of Hormuz remains a major source of tension between Tehran and Washington, with the waterway crucial to global energy and commercial shipping.
