Egyptian Activist Faces Risk of Extradition from Oman Over Social Media Posts
An Egyptian activist, Mariam Abdelbasette, and her newborn baby are reportedly facing imminent extradition from Oman to Egypt over social media posts criticizing the Egyptian government.
Abdelbasette has been detained since 25 May at a hospital facility in Muscat after undergoing an emergency caesarean section. Omani authorities have claimed they are acting on an Interpol Red Notice to deport her, similar to the earlier deportation of her husband, who was later imprisoned in Egypt.
However, there is no public record of any such Interpol notice against her. Her lawyer says the claim is false and argues that her detention and planned removal are unlawful.
Red Notices are international requests used to locate and provisionally arrest individuals, but each member state decides independently whether to act on them under its own laws.
The case has raised concerns about her safety and the legitimacy of the extradition process.
