Ebola outbreak in DRC infects over 70 medics as deaths surpass 200

An Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is spreading rapidly, with more than 70 healthcare workers infected and over 200 deaths reported, according to health officials.

The World Health Organization (WHO) says the situation is “serious” and evolving quickly, especially in eastern regions already affected by conflict, displacement, and weak health infrastructure.

Seventeen medical workers have died, while many others were exposed before the outbreak was officially declared in May, allowing the virus to spread unnoticed in healthcare settings. Officials believe the Bundibugyo strain may have been circulating for months.

Hospitals and clinics are facing severe shortages of protective equipment, including gloves and masks, increasing the risk of infection among frontline staff. The DRC also has one of the lowest ratios of healthcare workers per population, putting additional strain on the system.

Aid agencies warn that poor sanitation in displacement camps and reduced funding are worsening the crisis. The WHO has deployed support teams, with additional assistance from countries including Uganda and China, while also providing psychological support to exhausted medical staff.
