Canada Vows Dollar-for-Dollar Tariff Response After US Trade Talks Collapse

Canada is preparing to retaliate against new US tariffs after trade negotiations between Ottawa and Washington broke down.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada would respond with tariffs “dollar for dollar” to protect Canadian workers and businesses. The announcement came after the United States imposed 50 percent tariffs on about $20 billion worth of Canadian imports.

Canada’s planned measures will target a range of US products, including steel, dairy goods, electronics and other imports, with the new tariffs scheduled to take effect on September 8.

Carney said negotiations had made progress but failed to meet Canada’s objectives. He criticized last-minute US demands that Ottawa considered unfair and damaging to Canadian economic interests and sovereignty.

The collapse in talks has further strained relations between the two longtime trading partners and raised concerns about the future of their broader trade relationship.
