At least 24 people have been killed after a passenger bus plunged into a river in Bangladesh, in one of the country’s deadliest road accidents in recent months.

The crash occurred as the bus was attempting to board a ferry across the Padma River. Officials said the vehicle lost control and fell into the water with dozens of passengers onboard. Rescue teams were quickly dispatched to the scene, with divers and emergency workers searching for survivors. Several passengers were pulled from the river, but many are feared to have drowned.

Authorities said around 40 people were believed to be on the bus at the time of the accident, though the exact number remains unclear. The death toll could rise as search operations continue. Road and ferry accidents are relatively common in Bangladesh, often due to overcrowding and poor safety conditions.
