Mexican authorities have arrested a senior leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), known as “El Jardinero,” officials confirmed on April 27, 2026.

The suspect, identified as Ernesto “N”, is accused of overseeing violent operations for the cartel in the western state of Jalisco, including drug trafficking and armed attacks. Security Minister Rosa Icela Rodríguez said the arrest followed a coordinated operation involving federal forces, though further details on the location were not immediately disclosed.

Officials described the detainee as a key figure within CJNG, one of Mexico’s most dominant and violent criminal organizations. The cartel has been linked to large-scale drug distribution networks and frequent clashes with rival groups and security forces across the country.

Authorities said the arrest represents a significant blow to the group’s leadership structure, though analysts caution that such operations often have limited long-term impact due to the cartel’s decentralized nature. Mexico continues to face persistent violence tied to organized crime, despite ongoing government efforts to dismantle cartel networks.
