Israel has expanded firearm permit eligibility for residents in several Jewish neighborhoods in Jerusalem, a move officials say is aimed at strengthening security during a period of heightened tensions.

The policy, introduced by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, allows residents in 41 Jewish neighborhoods to apply for gun permits under relaxed requirements. Authorities say the change could make roughly 300,000 additional people eligible to obtain firearms.

Supporters of the measure argue it will help communities respond more quickly to security threats and improve personal safety. However, critics have raised concerns that expanding civilian access to firearms could increase tensions in an already volatile environment.

The decision comes as Israel continues to face security challenges during the ongoing conflict in the region. Officials say the policy forms part of broader efforts to strengthen local defense and preparedness across areas considered at higher risk of attacks.
