Iran Says Leaving Nuclear Treaty and Revising Nuclear Doctrine Are Possible

Iranian parliament spokesman Abbas Goudarzi has said that withdrawing from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and changing Iran’s nuclear doctrine would be “easily achievable” amid escalating tensions with the United States.

Goudarzi said Tehran’s differences with Washington were fundamental and warned against negotiations that could weaken Iran or give its opponents time to regroup. He argued that dealing with the US required what he described as “the language of force and the logic of power.”

His comments came as debate over Iran’s nuclear policy intensifies. Iran remains a member of the NPT, which seeks to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons while allowing peaceful nuclear energy programmes.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has continued to deny that Tehran seeks nuclear weapons, saying Iran would not have joined the NPT if it intended to develop them.

The remarks nevertheless signal that some Iranian officials are considering major changes to the country’s nuclear posture if pressure and military confrontation with the US continue.
