Gaza Donor James Chambers Faces US Extradition Request Over Alleged Hamas Funding
US authorities are seeking the extradition of wealthy American donor James “Fergie” Chambers from Spain over allegations that he provided financial support to Hamas. Chambers denies wrongdoing, while his wife and lawyers describe the case as politically motivated.
Chambers was arrested in Ibiza in July while looking for a school for his five-year-old son with his wife, actress and activist Stella Schnabel. He has since spent more than six weeks in a Madrid jail as Spanish authorities consider the US request.
US authorities have linked Chambers to the transfer of $7.5 million to Tunisia, alleging that the money was ultimately used to support Hamas. However, the US indictment remains sealed, meaning the specific allegations have not yet been disclosed to Chambers' defence team.
Chambers has donated more than $1 million to humanitarian projects in Gaza, including efforts providing bread, water and medical assistance. His wife says the funds were intended for humanitarian and philanthropic activities, while his lawyers argue that his support for Palestinians and criticism of Israel are central to the case.
Schnabel called the extradition attempt a dangerous precedent that could extend US political repression beyond American borders. Chambers' Spanish legal team, led by human-rights lawyer Baltasar Garzón, is seeking his release and opposing extradition.
Spanish authorities will now assess the US request, including whether extradition could amount to political persecution. If so, that could provide grounds for Spain to reject the request.
