Former UN Oversight Chief Defends ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan Amid Misconduct Case

Former UN investigations chief Ben Swanson has criticized the decision to suspend International Criminal Court Prosecutor Karim Khan over misconduct allegations, saying Khan was the victim of an unfair process.

Swanson, a former deputy head of the UN Office of Internal Oversight Services, has submitted expert opinions to the Assembly of States Parties on behalf of Khan’s legal team. He questioned how the investigation and subsequent decision were handled.

The ICC’s executive body suspended Khan after concluding that he committed “serious misconduct,” while a separate panel of three judges had earlier said the evidence did not establish misconduct or a breach of duty.

Swanson argued that the handling of the case raised concerns about whether justice would be properly served.
