Authorities in the Maldives have recovered the final two bodies after a scuba diving disaster left five Italian tourists dead during an excursion in the island nation.
The group had been taking part in a diving trip when the accident occurred in waters popular with international tourists. Rescue operations were launched after several members of the group failed to resurface, triggering a large-scale search involving local authorities and emergency teams.
Three bodies were recovered earlier in the operation, while the final two missing divers were later found, bringing the total death toll to five. Officials said investigations were continuing into what caused the tragedy, with early reports pointing to difficult sea conditions and possible underwater complications during the dive.
The incident shocked both local residents and the tourism industry in the Maldives, one of the world’s most famous scuba diving destinations. Italian authorities were reportedly coordinating with Maldivian officials following the deaths as families of the victims were informed and recovery efforts came to an end.
