Drone Incident Raises New Security Fears Across Europe

A drone carrying suspected plastic explosives flew past air-defence systems at Germany’s Leipzig/Halle Airport on August 4, raising concerns about a new level of security threats linked to the Russia-Ukraine war.

The airport is a key NATO airlift hub. The drone struck a Ukrainian cargo aircraft but failed to detonate before falling onto the runway. It was discovered about four hours later by a bus driver, who alerted security.

German media reported that DNA evidence linked the drone to a firebomb previously mailed to the same airport, which caused a freight container fire in July 2024. The incident has intensified fears of suspected Russian-linked operations targeting European infrastructure.
