Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten has drawn a distinction between the potential participation of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the United Nations General Assembly and Russian President Vladimir Putin at a future G20 summit. Both leaders are subject to International Criminal Court arrest warrants.
Different signals on international appearances
In an interview, Jetten said Netanyahu should be present at the UN General Assembly despite the warrant issued against him. He took a different position on the possibility of Putin attending the G20 while also facing an ICC warrant, saying such an appearance would send a very wrong signal.
His comments place the two leaders’ possible attendance at major international gatherings in contrasting terms. The remarks did not change the status of either ICC warrant.
Focus on the ICC warrants
The comparison raises questions about how governments discuss international justice and high-level diplomatic participation. Jetten’s comments addressed the separate settings of the UN General Assembly and the G20, while the warrants against Netanyahu and Putin remain in force.
