Countries have pledged about $1.5 billion (€1.3bn) in humanitarian aid for Sudan as the country’s civil war enters its fourth year.
The funding commitments were announced at an international conference in Berlin, Germany, as global leaders warned of a worsening crisis that has left nearly 34 million people in need of assistance inside Sudan.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the conflict as a “nightmare” and urged an end to the fighting, which began in April 2023 following a power struggle between Sudan’s military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Millions have been displaced by the violence, with more than 4.5 million people forced to flee their homes, while hunger and humanitarian needs continue to rise. Despite the pledges, aid agencies warn the funding still falls short of what is required, as fighting continues with no clear path toward a ceasefire.
