Matt Schlapp, the head of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), has drawn widespread criticism after making controversial remarks about Iranian schoolgirls killed in a recent bombing.
During a television discussion about the strike on a girls’ school in southern Iran, Schlapp suggested that the victims might have been “better off dead than forced to live under a burqa.” The comments quickly sparked backlash from critics who said the remarks were offensive and dismissive of the deaths of children.
The bombing of the Shajareh Tayyebeh girls’ school in Minab killed 168 people, most of them children, and has become one of the most controversial incidents in the current regional conflict. Schlapp’s statement spread widely on social media, where commentators from across the political spectrum condemned the remark as insensitive and dehumanizing.
Critics argued that political commentary should not minimize the deaths of civilians, particularly children. Supporters of Schlapp, however, said his comments were intended as criticism of Iran’s policies toward women and girls rather than a literal statement about the victims. The debate has added to the broader controversy surrounding the bombing and the political responses to it in the United States.
