US Vows to ‘Collapse’ Iran With New Sanctions as Energy Prices Spike
The United States is preparing what Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described as the “toughest sanctions in history” against Iran, as Washington seeks to intensify economic pressure on Tehran amid the ongoing war.
Bessent said the new measures would combine with the existing blockade to create a “one-two punch” against Iran’s economy. He said the goal was to increase pressure on the Iranian government and ultimately force its collapse.
The Treasury secretary is expected to provide details of the new sanctions on Monday.
His comments came a day after President Donald Trump announced what he called an “economic D-Day” against Iran and warned countries supporting Tehran that they could face severe economic consequences.
The escalation comes as the war continues to put pressure on global energy markets. Rising concerns over disruptions to Iranian oil exports and regional shipping have contributed to higher energy prices, increasing the potential economic impact well beyond Iran.
The new US measures could further strain Iran’s economy while also putting pressure on countries and companies that maintain trade or energy ties with Tehran.
