One United Nations peacekeeper was killed and another critically injured following an incident in southern Lebanon, the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) confirmed.

According to UNIFIL, the casualties resulted from an explosion that struck a peacekeeping patrol operating near the Israeli border. The exact circumstances surrounding the blast remain under investigation.

The incident comes amid escalating tensions in southern Lebanon, where exchanges of fire and military activity have intensified in recent weeks due to the broader regional conflict. UN peacekeepers have continued to operate in the area despite increasing risks. UN officials condemned the attack and called for an immediate investigation, stressing that peacekeepers must not be targeted under any circumstances.

The death highlights the growing danger faced by international forces deployed in the region, as cross-border hostilities and military operations continue to expand. UNIFIL, which has been stationed in southern Lebanon since 1978, is tasked with monitoring the ceasefire and supporting stability along the border.
