A United States submarine sank an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean near Sri Lanka in one of the most significant naval clashes of the escalating conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States.
According to reports, the Iranian vessel — identified as the destroyer IRIS Dena — was struck by a torpedo launched from a U.S. submarine roughly 40 nautical miles off Sri Lanka’s southern coast near the port city of Galle. The ship later sank after sustaining heavy damage.
Rescue operations were launched by Sri Lankan authorities after a distress signal was received from the vessel. Officials said dozens of Iranian sailors were killed in the attack, while several others were rescued from the water and taken to shore for treatment.
The sinking marks a rare modern example of a warship being destroyed by a submarine torpedo in active combat. Analysts say the incident highlights the growing risk that the ongoing confrontation with Iran could expand beyond the Middle East into wider international waters.
The attack comes amid escalating military exchanges across the region, including missile strikes, air raids and naval operations involving multiple countries.
