Nigel Farage Faces Unusual Clacton By-Election Challenge From Count Binface
Voters in Clacton, England, are heading to the polls in an unusual by-election featuring Reform UK leader Nigel Farage and satirical candidate Count Binface.
Farage, who won the Clacton seat in 2024, resigned as MP last month to trigger the contest after facing scrutiny over a £5m gift from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne. Farage has denied wrongdoing and said voters should decide whether he acted improperly.
The parliamentary investigation was suspended following his resignation but could resume if he returns to Parliament.
Major political parties have chosen not to contest the by-election, with Labour describing it as a political stunt. That leaves Count Binface, known for his humorous campaigns, among Farage's most prominent challengers.
Binface's campaign includes deliberately comic promises such as building at least one affordable home and "nationalising" singer Adele. A total of 34 candidates are standing, including Monster Raving Loony Party candidates and Reclaim Party leader Laurence Fox.
Farage is widely expected to win, but a strong performance by Binface could embarrass the Reform leader. The by-election also comes as Reform's national polling lead has weakened following Labour's recent improvement.
