Following the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) withdrawal from Aleppo's Sheikh Maqsoud district, residents and Syrian government forces gained access to previously restricted areas. They uncovered a vast underground tunnel network stretching approximately 6 kilometers, linking neighborhoods like Sheikh Maqsoud, Ashrafiyah, and beyond.
The passages, dug beneath homes, shops, and mosques, formed a subterranean "city" fully equipped for prolonged operations, with intersecting branches and deep descents via stairs. Some tunnels were wide and high enough for vehicles, including cars, trucks, and even potentially tanks, supporting the SDF's defensive strategies and logistics. Security teams continue searching the system, which highlights the scale of SDF's hidden infrastructure left behind.
